OKIDEN SUGARHALL Competition for Young Musician

OKIDEN SUGARHALL Competition began in 1994, which coincided with the opening of SUGARHALL here in Nanjo City. SUGARHALL is a concert hall specially designed for classical music performance, and is uniquely located in the middle of sugar cane fields; hence the name, SUGARHALL. Since the time when Okinawa was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom, we have enjoyed, appreciated, and elaborated our music, dance, and many other art forms. With the passion for beautiful music and the geographical potential of Okinawa as the gateway to Asia, I believe we can and should play a role in facilitating the cultural exchange among young musicians in Asia.

The mission of OKIDEN SUGARHALL Competition is, therefore, to discover young and talented musicians, and to contribute to the promotion of regional and international cultural exchange through music. The Competition has been supported by the Nanjo City Government, Okinawa Electric Power Company, and the Okinawa Times since it began in 1994, with the grand prize of 1,000,000 JPY (8,333 USD, @1 USD = 120 JPY).
